Ciljevi organizacije:

Ona ostvaruje ove ciljeve kroz suradnju s poljskim i stranim kulturnim, obrazovnim i akademskim institucijama, središnjim i lokalnim vlastima, nevladinim organizacijama i medijima.

Ciljane skupine:

Zadaci, glavne aktivnosti:

Obrazovni program Muzeja nastaje u saradnji s nastavnicima i odgajateljima.

Name: POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews

Short description:

General information

The POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews was formally founded in 2005 by the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute of Poland, the City of Warsaw and the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. It was opened to the public in 2013. The Museum’s core exhibition, presenting the 1,000-year history of Polish Jews, was opened in 2014; so far, it has been visited by nearly a million visitors.

Aims of the organization

To preserve the past and to shape the future – such is the mission of the POLIN Museum. The Museum focuses on popularising the history and culture of Polish Jews, as well as promoting the idea of tolerance in Polish society and building bridges between different cultures to prevent anti-Semitism, bias and xenophobia. It pursues these objectives through cooperation with Polish and foreign cultural, educational and academic institutions, central and local government authorities, NGOs and the media.

Target groups

The Museum’s activities are addressed to everyone who is interested in the history of the Jewish community in Poland – regardless of their nationality and country of residence. Thousands of Poles come to the Museum to discover that the history of Polish Jews is an integral part of Poland’s history. Among the Museum’s visitors there are also Jewish groups from Israel, the United States and many other countries from all over the globe, who come to learn about the Jewish community that had once been the largest and most important in the world. Finally, we host several thousand non-Jewish foreign visitors. The Museum also carries out a number of activities aimed at particular target groups: children, youth and adults, teachers, police officers, as well as the academic community. We also hold special meetings for politicians and the media.

Tasks, main activities

Apart from being home to the core exhibition, the Museum also functions as a cultural, academic and educational center with a rich cultural programme. As a cultural and academic center, the Museum hosts a lively series of programmes, including concerts, films, performances, temporary exhibitions, as well as conferences, lectures, and symposia. As an educational center, we devote particular attention to supporting all efforts to raise the younger generation in a spirit of tolerance, mutual understanding and respect for other cultures. Our objective is to combine the historical context with the reflection on contemporary issues.

The Museum has been carrying out educational activities since 2007. Today we offer a wide array of educational programming for schools, families, students and the general public. Our activities, on the one hand, address the history and culture of Polish Jews, and on the other hand, deal with cultural, ethnic and religious diversity, as well as the challenges of functioning in a diversified society.

The Museum offers a wide range of educational activities for different audiences: classes and workshops for schoolchildren and youth which present the 1,000-year history of Polish Jews as an integral part of the history of Poland, anti-discrimination workshops for teachers and police officers, walking tours, competitions, and meetings with the witnesses to history. We also invite people to participate in interdisciplinary projects which often draw on both the arts and the humanities. We organize student exchange programmes and international partner projects, as well as promote the education of the Museum’s employees.

The Museum also offers exceptional educational tools: from the fascinating core exhibition and temporary exhibitions to the Visual History Archive of the USC Shoah Foundation, which constitutes the world’s largest historical database of Holocaust witness testimonies. The educational programming of the Museum is created in consultation with teachers and educators.
